Janine Biunno heads the Museum Archives Department at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. She began her career working on digitization projects for the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston over twenty years ago. She initially found her way to the world of digital imaging, and later digital asset management and digital preservation, as an artist who worked extensively with photographic media. After completing her MFA, she went on to further her education in both museum studies and information science, advancing her commitment to the preservation of cultural heritage materials.
Janine has worked as Director of Archives for architect Steven Holl, where she was instrumental in the establishment of their diverse archival program, then as the Director of Archives and Information Management for The Noguchi Museum, where she led the project team responsible for the construction of the Museum’s comprehensive archival database / DAMS and full collection digitization. Since early 2024 Janine has worked at The Metropolitan Museum of Art where she oversees archives and records management and spearheaded The Met’s first official digital preservation initiative. She is passionate about informational access and the arts.
