The National Gallery in London was an early adopter of digital imaging technologies, taking 400 Megapixel images of its paintings by the late 1990s. At that time, storage space rather than file management was the key problem. But as digital imaging has become easier and more widespread, and the need to streamline collections management processes and digital publication workflows ever more pressing, the technologies used to manage images of the Gallery’s collection need to be updated.
In this session, Rupert Shepherd, Collection Information Manager at the National Gallery in London will summarise the Gallery’s current collection image management practice. Rupert will share:
- Current challenges relating to integrated indexing
- Data mapping and rights management challenges
- The Gallery’s journey on its route to creating a new seamless customised system fit for purpose for its many stakeholders
